Fried Green Tomatoes

Once again our Fried Green Tomato Booth was a big success. In fact, so many people have asked us for the recipe, we decided to post it here.
We sincerely thank you for your support, and hope you enjoy preparing and eating your own Fried Green Tomatoes.
Fried Green Tomato Recipe
INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 Cups bleached white flour
  • 1 Cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
  • 2 Teaspoons basil
  • 1 Teaspoon oregano
  • 1 Teaspoon crushed black pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon iodized salt
  • 1 Quart buttermilk AS NEEDED
Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Wash & slice fresh green tomatoes. Dip sliced green tomatoes in buttermilk. Gently toss sliced tomatoes in batter. Put sliced tomatoes in basket and carefully lower in hot oil (300°) or fry in skillet on stovetop, turning only once. Cook until lightly browned. Serve hot.
Notes: Any fresh green tomato can be used. We only use tomatoes grown on local farms. Wash all tomatoes thoroughly and slice approx. 1/4 inch thick with a sharp knife. Buttermilk is used as an additional holding agent for the batter. Cooking time in a skillet is less than 5 minutes on medium-high setting. We use only Canola Oil. Change batter once it begins to clump.
